Clive Madgwick RBA (British 20th Century, 1934-2005), Bolton Castle, Yorkshire, oil on canvas, signed, measurements, image size 51 x 74 cm
Clive Madgwick was born into a medical family in Surrey, in 1934, the second of three sons. He went to Epsom College and later studied dentistry at Guy’s Hospital in London before joining the RAF as a dentist. In 1965 he left the RAF and joined a dental practice in Sudbury Suffolk. It was whilst working here that he got struck down with a serious bout of glandular fever and to keep him occupied while he recovered, began sketching and painting local houses.
Madgwick’s works began attracting attention and as his reputation grew so did the demand for his work. He exhibited in numerous galleries in and around East Anglia and also became a member of the Society of Equestrian Artists, The United Society of Artists and the Royal Society of British Artists. The subjects he painted included rural scenes, coastal scenes, hunting scenes, town and city scapes, nudes and still life. He also painted scenes from France and Italy.
Madgwick was commissioned by industrial clients including Boots, Abbey National Building Society and many more. His paintings can also be found in the private collection of Her Majesty the Queen. He died in 2005 aged 70.
Clive Madgwick's paintings are now highly collectable both in the UK and the USA.
